A group of around 15 young squatters who are believed to have been moved on from a former NHS building almost 2 weeks ago have taken up residence in New River House; a disused office block in Enfield town.
Owners of the premises are seeking a court order to remove the group and police are ready to assist in an eviction but until the court order is approved nothing can be done to prevent the empty property from experiencing the same damage and vandalism as previously seen at the NHS site.
The Enfield Independent reports that the squatters are camped on the fourth floor having barricaded themselves into the empty building.
Meanwhile, in North London residents are tackling a growing network of squatters head on, forming a ‘house watch’ scheme after the arrival of a group of eastern European squatters at a local resident’s home.
The New Southgate community plan to protect people’s homes while they are on holiday but many feel “nervous” or “threatened”** by the visitors who may be linked to an organised gang targeting empty properties in the area.
Following last month’s very public eviction of the Clifton Terrace squatters in Brixton, the tension in the media is high and squatting is sparking more debates than ever, both in the local community and in local and national government.
